At each knot, the stem takes a different direction giving a very slight zigzag configuration. This particularity that we also find in other species is only perceptible at a short distance. Under rain or wind, the end of the stems bend towards the ground. The knots are prominent. The rhizomes are provided with aerial branches that allow this species to withstand the excess water in the soil.
Like all other bamboos, it does well on well-drained ground but is distinguished by its ability to withstand heavy terrain with difficulty in draining excess water.
